First HUG (Homeschoolers Under God) was formed by First Baptist Church of Auburndale in spring 2011 so homeschool families could support one another through fellowship and activities with a Christian worldview. Membership draws from Auburndale, Lakeland, Winter Haven, Lake Alfred and Polk City and requires an application, signed bylaws and a $40 per-family registration fee, with co-op tuition charged per semester. The group runs Mom's Meetings, events, field trips, parties and a co-op; the co-op enhances rather than replaces a family's core curriculum. All teaching staff complete background checks.
