Dade Battlefield Historic State Park was acquired by Florida in 1921 and is the second-oldest site in the state designated for protection in the public interest. The 80-acre park memorialises the 1835 battle between Major Francis L. Dade's command and Seminole forces that began the Second Seminole War. The Dade Battlefield Society, formed in 1987, is the park's Citizen Support Organization and a volunteer-run non-profit whose stated aim is increasing public awareness of the battlefield through living history events, nature programs, social functions, educational and recreational activities, festivals and the annual reenactment of Dade's Battle. The Society provides historic era interpretation services to the National Guard, the U.S. National Staff College and schools across three counties. The park has a visitor centre with battle exhibits and a 12-minute history film, a half-mile trail through pine flatwoods, a playground, picnic shelters and a recreation hall.
